We provide outreach in Courts through our duty lawyer programs

South-East Monash Legal Service provides legal assistance and representation through a range of court-based duty lawyer programs across Melbourne’s south-east. These services help people access timely legal advice, representation and support at critical points in the legal process, often when they would otherwise be unable to secure legal assistance.

Working alongside courts, support services and community partners, our duty lawyer programs improve access to justice, support fair court outcomes, and help people navigate complex legal systems. Where appropriate, clients can also be connected with ongoing casework and broader legal and non-legal support.

Dandenong Magistrates’ Court Criminal Duty Lawyer Program

South-East Monash Legal Service operates Victoria’s first supervised student criminal law duty lawyer program. Through this innovative model, clients receive legal assistance from law students undertaking professional placements under the supervision of experienced criminal law practitioners.

Victoria's first supervised student criminal law duty lawyer program

The service provides advice and representation in appropriate matters involving:

  • Driving offences, including driving while suspended or disqualified, drink and drug driving offences, and careless driving
  • Lower-level offences against the person, including unlawful assault and recklessly causing injury
  • Lower-level property offences, including criminal damage and shop theft
  • Possession of drugs of dependence
  • Local law offences and lower-level regulatory matters, including fisheries, EPA and Department of Transport prosecutions
  • Fines Victoria and Sheriff enforcement matters relating to unpaid infringement debt

The program expands access to legal assistance while also providing practical training opportunities for emerging lawyers. Eligible clients may be referred to our Narre Warren office for ongoing casework support in criminal law and family violence matters.

“Appearing as a student duty lawyer under supervision at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was the most formative experience of my law degree. It sharpened my advocacy skills and deeply affirmed my passion for criminal defence. I found purpose in standing beside clients at some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives.”

Family Advocacy and Support Service (FASS)

We operate Monday through Friday at the Melbourne Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia.

The Family Advocacy and Support Service (FASS) provides free, short-term legal assistance to people involved in family law proceedings who are affected by family violence, including both victim-survivors and alleged perpetrators.

FASS is an integrated, multidisciplinary service that combines legal assistance with specialist support. Alongside a lawyer, clients may also receive support from family violence practitioners and mental health workers to help address safety, wellbeing and other practical needs.

The service can assist with:

  • Legal advice and information about family law matters, including parenting, property, divorce and child support, that are being litigated in the court system
  • Advice about court processes and upcoming hearings
  • Explaining proposed orders, court orders and court outcomes
  • Assistance with urgent applications in limited circumstances, including recovery orders and Airport Watchlist applications
  • Limited court appearances, subject to capacity and the discretion of the duty lawyer

Through its wraparound model, FASS helps people experiencing family violence to access both legal assistance and broader supports, improving safety, participation in court processes and longer-term outcomes for families.
