Response to proposed minimum standards for rental properties and rooming houses

Safe, affordable and climate-resilient housing is essential for the wellbeing of renters, particularly those already experiencing disadvantage. In its response to the Victorian Government’s consultation on minimum rental standards, South-East Monash Legal Service supported stronger requirements for heating, cooling, insulation and energy efficiency, while emphasising that rising housing and energy costs are placing significant pressure on low-income renters, victim-survivors of family violence, international students and other vulnerable groups.

The submission calls for higher energy-efficiency standards, stronger enforcement, protection against rent increases linked to upgrades, and measures to ensure all renters can access safe and affordable housing in a changing climate
